According to an eye witness who spoke with SaharaReporters, the two victims of the electoral violence were killed while they were in their houses waiting for the counting of their votes, which had been concluded in their ward.

BREAKING: Boko Haram Prevents Yobe Governor Ibrahim Geidam From Voting

23 February 2019 - 8:33am

Boko Haram insurgents have prevented Ibrahim Geidam, Governor of Yobe State, from participating in the presidential and National Assembly elections.

The Governor wanted to leave for Bukarti, his hometown in Yunusari Local Government Area of Yobe State, to participate in the elections, but could not do so as a result of an early morning attack by the insurgents on Geidam and Bunu Yadi communities in the early hours of Saturday.

Abdullahi Biego, Director General of Media Affairs to the Governor, confirmed the incident ina sttement on Saturday in Damaturu, the Yobe State capital.

The statement read: “The security agencies would naturally seek to reinforce and increase security around the governor for him to travel to cast his vote.

“The increased security around the governor will mean that vital security resources that are needed elsewhere in the state would be diverted and allocated to the governor.

“It is better and more useful for the security agents, including soldiers, Police, civil defence, DSS, to focus their attention on providing security for the election than devoting large security contingent for the governor to cast his vote.”

Geidam is contesting for a seat in the Senate on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

VIDEO: Policewoman Saves Ballot Box From Snatcher In Ogun

23 February 2019 - 6:46am

A female officer of the Nigeria Police Force foiled an attempt to snatch a ballot box in ward 5, unit 15 at Ijem, Odo Oba, Abeokuta South in Ogun State.

A voter had made a bet with his friends to snatch the ballot box. However, as he made to carry out his bet, the policewoman present at the unit apprehended the fellow and saved the box.

According to our correspondent, who was at the polling unit, the man has since been handed over to the officers of the Department of State Service (DSS), who took him away.

In the buildup to the election, Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari had said anyone who attempts to snatch ballot boxes does so at the risk of their lives.

“I'm going to warn anybody who thinks he has enough influence in his locality to lead a body of thugs to snatch boxes or to disturb the voting system. He will do it at the expense of his own life,” Buhari had said.

He was heavily criticised for the comment.

However, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) took a different view, stating that ballot box snatchers would be punished according to the law.

Mohammed Adamu also said election offenders would be arrested and punished according to the law.

He said: “In the course of voting, if any electoral offence is committed, we will work with the INEC officials to apprehend the culprit and we will set up an investigative team led by our Commissioner of Police to investigate such cases and prosecute them. Be it vote buying, ballot box snatching, thuggery, if you commit any of them, you will be arrested and prosecuted.”
